I find that I tend to absorb and learn more about historical and saintly people when I read a novel about them than just a dry account or biography.
I read Army of Angels, a novel about St. Joan of Arc, but it was rather too secularist for my taste, including a violent rape and a nagging doubt throughout the book as to the source of her visions. It was a good story, but not something I’d recommend for inspiration or a true accounting of this holy woman’s life.
Science Fiction author Orson Scott Card has been writing a series of books about the women of Genesis. The first two, Sarah and Rebekah were excellent, and I look forward to reading the latest, Rachel and Leah. His book on Moses, Stone Tablets, was wonderful for about the first half, after which the author’s weird Mormon ideas about Moses slowly worked their way into the character.
Does anyone know of any good novels about Saints or saintly persons?
