What fictional novels have helped you to grow in virtue? What virtues have these novels fostered?

Well my answers are sure to be controversial.

Charlotte’s Web: This children’s novel taught me a great deal about the importance of kindness and today I am a vegetarian. 🙂

The Harry Potter series inspired me to an appreciation of loyalty and dedication to academic studies.

The Twilight Saga, specifically Breaking Dawn, inspired me in the areas of saving sex for marriage and respecting human life. Because of baby Renesmee, I got involved in the pro-life movement.

I read the Diamond in the Window sometime around 1990, and a few scenes stuck with me decades later. I liked the one with the Hall of Mirrors, where the children are running down a corridor. The corridor ends with two mirrors showing images of themselves. They pick one, without paying attention to it, because they’re chasing something/someone… and rinse and repeat. About 20 or 30 mirrors later, they stop and realize the mirrors are no longer reflecting images of their current selves, but rather, images of their future selves. And their future selves are in a very disagreeable state. Each mirror-choice was a life-choice. By living their lives unthinkingly and choosing life paths recklessly, they ended up as unpleasant, disagreeable people. They retraced their steps, and tried to choose more consciously— and ended up in situations where they had not just one choice, but many options to choose from. They picked the ones that appealed most to them, and ended up in a far better state— because they lived their lives consciously choosing to do the right thing. And occasionally, there would be a dozen “right things” to choose from— but all of the paths were fulfilling in their own way.

So, it’s a very literate fantasy story that incorporates history and Transcendentalism and danger, but in a very child-accessible way. It has a lot of truths in it, and I found it very inspiring, but especially the Adventure in the Mirror.
