November -- Black Catholic History Month / Please Include "Lift Every Voice and Sing"

as I recall, in our kids’ school February was Black History Month, but perhaps that has changed. Here in Texas we celebrate Juneteenth, Emancipation Proclamation day, I think it is, would like to learn more about it. As regards to the historical considerations vis a vis chattel slavery and immigrants, an interesting book is* How the Irish Became White* by Noel Ignatiev.

Another take on the evils of slavery and the slave culture, from the women’s point of view is Willa Cather’s Sapphira and the Slave Girl

jmm08, have you heard Dr. Dolores Grier on EWTN radio? She’s been a guest on many programs and I think hosted one called “Black and Roman Catholic” for some time. She’s a really excellent speaker. I love the way she tells the story of Pierre Toussaint. See here
