Novena and the "Our Lady of Pompeii"

What can you tell me about “Our Lady of Pompeii” and the 54 Day Rosary Novena Prayers ? I have a catholic friend who all of the sudden became very devoted to his religion and this practice. He says he has intense feelings during this and that it is very strong prayer.
 
Our Lady of Pompeii is the title of Our Lady at the Italian town closest to ancient Pompeii. It also refers to the parish’s painting of Our Lady of the Rosary. Since the town was very poor back when they were looking for a picture, they got an old secondhand one. It was super-dirty and ugly. But it helped encourage the local people to start praying the Rosary.

And then miracles started happening and Mary appeared to some of the people around there.
