I would like to have the praying of novenas explained. What is involved? Is there a set way in which this is to be done? I would like to pray a novena or novenas as part of my Lent focus. Thank You!

I also have a few questions about novenas:

Can I pray more than one at a time? For example could I pray both the Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Novena during the same period of nine days?

And can I pray multiple novenas of the same type for different requests during the same period of nine days? For example could I pray one Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus for Request X and another for Request Y? Or should I wait to finish one for a certain request before starting another for another request?

Thanks.🙂

One more question:

I notice that some novenas have specific dates attached to them…does that mean they are only supposed to be prayed then?

So many questions! Good to see the interest though.

Yes, it’s absolutely permissible to pray multiple novenas at the same time or to pray the same type of novena for different requests (although you probably wouldn’t need to pray the Sacred Heart Novena twice over in your example, you could pray it just once and mention both Request X and Request Y while praying it the once - it’s up to you)

The novenas that mention particular dates usually will be novenas that are associated with particular feasts. For example, it makes sense to pray a novena to do with the Assumption of Our Lady on or around the time of the Feast of the Assumption.

There aren’t any hard-and-fast rules with such things though, if you liked the prayer and wanted to do it some other time of year I’m sure God and Our Lady wouldn’t mind 🙂

Thank you so much for your answers, LilyM! 🙂

I have been reading over a lot of the novena prayers on EWTN’s website and elsewhere and they are very beautiful and I can’t wait to pray them!
