I wan’t the Catholic answer to this, are we saved with works, or by faith or by Gods grace? I have just heard so many different answers.

In session 6 of the Council of Trent, the Church declared that we are only saved by the Grace of God won for us by Jesus on the Cross. To deny this in any way is anathema.
That Council, in the same session, also declared that to believe that we can merit Salvation by our own works in a way that negates the need for Christ’s sacrifice is anathema because the “merit” of our own works only come from God’s grace as well. It also declared that believing that faith is not required for salvation is anathema and also that believing that only faith is required is anathema.
The Catholic Church teaches that we are only saved by God’s Grace. God applies that grace to us through faith and through works done in faith. Just as faith without works is dead, works without faith is dead. Faith and works together without God’s grace is also dead. If you want to read the entire explanation for yourself, you can pick up a copy of “The Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent,” published by TAN. Session 5 and 6 discuss the Catholic Church’s teaching on Original Sin and Justification (respectively). The Second Vatican Council affirmed the teachings of the Council of Trent.

By the grace on GOD. The first grace we recieve is our own creation, unmerited. The second is Baptismal grace, santifying grace, the grace that cleanses and justifies. After this we choose to remain or reject GODs will. We reject GODs will through mortal sin. Grace acts upon us, grace does not act FOR us.

You live that faith in your works. This does NOT require perfection of you, that is Christ’s alone. It does mean that you make an honest effort to live as Christ on earth. We on earth are the only body He has in the world. You are His voices, His eyes, ears, arms, and legs. Your works won’t save you, but if faith has no impact on the way you live, it is dead.

To briefly summarize the answers given above, it’s not a matter of either/or, but instead of all of those things. The “either/or” was the result of Luther’s fevered mind misinterpreting St. Paul, and that fateful misinterpretation has now carried on for centuries. A Catholic must always be firm in resisting this false belief.

there is no argument between catholics and protestants on whether we are saved by grace. yes, we are saved by grace alone. sola gratia as an official principle was declared in the council of orange a thousand years before the reformation. it wasn’t an ecumenical council but it’s conclusions were given a special ratification by the pope.
as to the faith and works argument, yes, we are saved by faith in jesus but it is impossible to have faith and not do the good works, they are bound to come in a person who “lives by faith”(rom3:23)

and works without faith? to think that we that it will “earn” us heavn is a grave presumption that can lead nowhere near heaven. “for the free gift of god…”(rom6:23)
