I heard something about that a while back, when it was in the R&D stages. I’m a huge supporter of science but thats a little twilight zone-ish for me.

The premise of this experiment is a good one, but its still kind of scary because what would happen if the animal got too many human cells, or human brain cells…that would be horrific

We will be able to carry on a conversation with our pets.
Our old cat was very conversant without having a human cell in his body. Examples:

MEOW! = “feed me”.

MEOW! = “pet me. now. don’t even think about stopping.”

MEOW!!! = “you opened tuna. Give me some”.

NOOOOO!!! = “No!!!” (most frequently with regard to baths or trips to the vet).

Then he died of kidney failure. Poor kitty.

I wonder where the Church will stand on rational souls and 10% animal-90% human beings…
The world of human embryonic experimental is a scary, sacreligious place…

This is sick. Scientists are using their power to do evil instead of good. This should not be happening.

Now assuming you believe the intent of the research, that is to save lives by providing transplantable organs, you have to wonder how desperate a sick person would be accept a sheep/human organ?
There comes a time when you need to focus on saving your soul. Say this were possible, the best you would be doing is prolonging your physical life.

WHY For God’s sake?
Because they can?
Its like playing God.
Not quite true.

The Vatican has already look at the issue of Zenotransplantation ( transplants from animals). The Vatican also looked at the prospect of genetically modifying the animals so that transplants would be more sucessful.

And the Vatican found that it is acceptable, under certain circumstances, namely that the benefit be significant
As we have already observed, the possibility of working out such genetic modifications, using genes of human origin as well, is morally acceptable when done in respect for the animal and for biodiversity, and with a view to bringing significant benefits to man himself.
…and there would be no undue suffering on the part of the animal and due scientific process.
…we will now enumerate some fundamental ethical conditions which must be respected:
  1. Concern for the well-being of genetically modified animals should be guaranteed so that the effect of the transgene’s expression, possible modification of the anatomical, physiological and/or behavioural aspects of the animal may be assessed, all the while limiting the levels of stress and pain, suffering and anxiety experienced by the animal;
  1. The effects on the offspring and possible repercussions for the environment should be considered;
  1. Such animals should be kept under tight control and should not be released into the general environment;
  1. The number of animals used in experiments should be kept to a bare minimum;
  1. The removal of organs and/or tissues must take place during a single surgical operation;
  1. Every experimental protocol on animals must be evaluated by a competent ethics committee.

SCIENTIFIC ASPECTS AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Perhaps we ought to read Revelation in a slightly more fundamentalist fashion the way things are going. :eek: Perhaps they’re going to construct the dragon!

The only difference is that when the pets uhh “talk back” in the future they will speak in English and with a large vocabulary.
can they do something with teenagers so they will talk back with a vocabulary larger than “nuthin”, “allright” and “whatever”?

Like it or not someday science fiction will be a reality. We will share the planet with creatures that are half human and animal.
Animals will be able to talk, read and write. We will be able to carry on a conversation with our pets.

A new Superhero… BAH-Man…!! 🙂

But seriously,… chimps are already 98% human (whatever that actually means), and still show very little sign of wanting to work for IBM or Starbucks, so I’m not too concerned about a 15% human sheep.

Unless a lifeform is at least 100% human, that is “human working genetic parts”, they won’t be able to “do human stuff”, and are just animals.

…of course if they’re 100% human and 82% sheep, THEN we may have some weird problems our hands…!

I guess that makes us pre-tribulation? Or something:cool: .

Aren’t “teenagers” just the results of “genetic experiments” performed by underqualified but highly capable pseudo-scientists (parents)?

Oh,… that’s not very Catholic, is it…?

No. No it’s not.

That would be a good “secularist view” of them, though, wouldn’t it be?

Yes. Yes it would.

<< …disgusted with MY OWN SELF for that one! >>

A sheep that’s 15% human?

Big deal.

A lot of humans I know are already about 75% sheep.

My cat knows math. I asked him what’s 16 minus 16 and he said nothing.

(an old joke but it works all the time)
