Why???
I use to live near Washington DC and visited The Mall and many of the monuments and museums down there. It is a fascinating place to visit especially if you are a history buff. But I remember an argument that a lot of politicians, historians, administrators, the general public and so forth were having about oversaturating The Mall area with statues, museums and exhibits. The Mall area was to be a park where people could stroll along and enjoy the day looking at the reflecting pools and the trees and the surrounding sites and sounds. So now they want to add a 40 ft tall nude statue of a woman for women’s right. Could they not think of a better way to represents women’s rights in a monument? What is wrong with our culture? Why not make it a statue of Susan B. Anthony or someone representing the great strives women have gone through in life. What do you all think?

Has anybody read the book strong textLord of the Worldstrong text by Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson? If so do you find this statue somewhat familiar?

I actually think that’s a beautiful sculpture and a great cause. To quote the article:

The sculptures will inevitably produce some controversy wherever they go, but Whitelaw said she’s confident that there are plenty of people excited to have art “supporting the end of violence against women and equal rights for women right there in the heart of the nation.”

Obviously the controversy will help bring attention to the cause of Women’s Rights.

Eh, there are statues and pictures of naked ladies and naked men in every art museum in the world including the Vatican, and art students still study depicting the human form. If it was a march of naked human ladies, I might be concerned. If it’s just an art statue and it’s not sexualized or grotesque, then it’s just one more statue in the endless nude statue parade.

It’s been awhile since I read “Lord of the World,” but now that you mention it I do recall the unveiling of the nude female statue in St. Paul’s Cathedral by the man who is the persona of the anti-Christ. I’m also reminded of the “goddess of reason” in the French Revolution. They would have loved this display as a tribute to atheistic secularism.

Thank you JimG, finally a voice of reason. As I said before there are better ways to show women’s rights than to have a forty-five foot statue of a nude woman. Here’s just one of many ideas one can come up with: a statue of 500 of the most influential women in the world down through the centuries locking arms in unity. And as a side note, I know there are and were more than 500 hundred influential women in the world, there has been millions if not billions of influential women down through the ages.

Nude sculptures and statues are all over the museums and buildings and 80% of them are from a day gone by when doing nudes was en vogue and not as controversial. I’m surprised the didn’t put on the nude sculpture one of those pink hats that they were wearing at the women’s march in Washington DC. Come people lets stop trying to push an agenda on people and lets truly work peacefully for racial and women’s rights - together.

How about a statue commemorating the women blinded in acid attacks or literally stoned in the Middle East?

(crickets)

“He said the sculpture was meant to combat a culture that increasingly dehumanizes women and sexualizes the female form.”

and making a HUGE statue of a naked woman isn’t dehumanizing and sexualizing?

I have never understood why being sexual and being naked has anything to do with women rights. Why is lasciviousness at the forefront of this movement?

To answer the question, what would a world look like where women were safe? Is this the same crazy double think that has women arguing for (mostly female) sex selective abortions in the name of women’s liberation? Women are safe in a society that objectifies the sexually nubile female form? Colour me distinctly unimpressed.

I think a better way to recognize women’s rights would be a statue or memorial to some of the great women in American history.

It’s not about that.
It’s about calling attention to the group putting it up.

I prefer that other statue of a little girl. I think it’s called ‘fearless girl’. Unfortunately I’ve seen pictures of guys groping that statue, so maybe more statues of young girls are not a good idea.

The artist seems to want to focus on the issue of sexual assault but honestly, a naked statue won’t do anything. The men who are doing the assaulting would probably enjoy such art anyway. I don’t really understand why a nude woman would help the cause.

And if I’m going to be annoying about it, if I was free, I still wouldn’t be walking around naked?? Of course, nudity unfortunately makes a bigger statement.

I think there are better ways to showcase courage and strength in women without taking our clothes off. Art aside, women seem to equate such values with skin. Wearing skimpy clothing=confident in body etc. Disappointing.

Plain old rebellion. They’re tired of being told to cover up and not do anything sexual while men are not being held up to the same standard of purity.

So they genuinely believe sexualising themselves before men do it themselves is empowering…lol.

Anyway, this can be an example of how society tries to go to the other extreme to fix an issue.

The modern feminism movement makes no sense. They rely on lies, logical fallacies, and emotional appeal to do anything. Their logic also makes no sense, such as in this case. They are the first ones to cry “rape” at anything even remotely sexual, yet they are in favor of putting a nude statue up which will undoubtedly cause many men to fall into sexual temptation.

I don’t get it. I just don’t.

Even more evidence that we are fallen creatures. Rub it in why don’t cha
