Number of Catholics in the world

When we read a statistic that shows the number of Catholics in the world (or country, or state, etc.) does the stat usually use the number of people baptized or is it based on local church membership?

If it uses baptismal records, it’s probably an unrealistically large number since it would include all of the people who either left the faith or do not practice.

Just curious.
 
I would guess that it is based solely on number of baptized people.

Traditionally, only about 28% of Catholics in the US are regular mass attendees and in some countries it is way less than that.
 
I don’t know which statistics that you are looking at. The statistics published by the national bishops conferences each year are gained from parish and diocesan census taken formally each year, usually in October, when the actual number of persons present at each Mass is counted on a specified Sunday in that country, and when each parish reports on the number of baptisms and other sacraments conferred during the past year, number of those enrolled in Catholic schools and CCD etc.

I have read that there are somewhere between 1.1 and 1.4 billion Catholics world wide. Is this number derived the way you state here?
