Hello all!

I am currently a Nursing student and I am wondering if upon graduation I can practice as a Nurse and also join a religious community?

I recall that Franciscans can work outside the Friary but can they work as Nurses?

I appreciate the answers!

What would be more likely, frankly, is that you would be working with the elderly and the sick of the community, internal to the community, after completing novitiate and, perhaps, the period of temporary vows. Depending upon the province, there may be other apostolates for which your training would be invaluable.

Having a Religious who is a nurse is a great blessing to a province of friars or to an abbey of monks, especially in these days.
 
I am open to that as I am drawn to the poor and community nursing especially the homeless and marginalized.

Anyone know where I can get help? I am in Toronto Canada

Yes, this is absolutely possible. We do have nurses in my province in the United States (who work in nursing ministry outside the community too). We’ve had (and have) nurses who work as nurses, as well as others who were also ordained and served as chaplains. It’s worth talking to a vocation director about.
 
If you are not absolutely committed to the Franciscans, there are some men’s communities whose primary ministries are nursing, and you might want to look into them. Here are two that I know of:

The Brothers of Mercy (there’s various branches) would be what you’re looking for in that regard. 👍
