Can anyone tell me the differences between the Carmelite Order (O. Carm) and Disclaced/Reformed Carmelites (O.C.D)? I mean, not just in terms of doctrine and such but also in terms of culture, focus, membership, etc?

Thanks

Men or women?

I can not really speak for the women, though I think most OCD are cloistered while our O.Carm. women are both, we even have a couple groups of female hermits.

As for men. We are pretty much the same now a days I think. I believe the OCD are a bit less active though they still do run some parishes. The OCD seem to be a bit more acdemic, that is teaching at the university level and publishing through the Institute of Carmelite Studies.

We O.Carm. are active for the most part, we do have a couple of male hermit groups. We staff parishes, we (in the Province Most Pure Heart of Mary (Chicago)) have three retreat houses, a shrine to the Little Flower, as well as working in 5 high schools, three of which we run ourselves, two are shared with groups of sisters. We also have men working in various other ministries.

I hope this helps.

There’s a thread on this subject at: forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=333843

Perhaps the information there might lead you to some more specific inquiries, since what you ask is a very broad question?
