Matthew 8:23-27
The Calming of the Storm at Sea.
23* j He got into a boat and his disciples followed him. 24Suddenly a violent storm* came up on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by waves; but he was asleep. 25k They came and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us We are perishing!” 26He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?”* Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great calm. 27The men were amazed and said, “What sort of man is this, whom even the winds and the sea obey?”
I think we all face situations like the one above. Some anxiety causes us to fret and we turn to God in panic. We hope for a job, or something we need to come to pass etc …
I have read that passage over and over again … and wonder what the disciples did wrong.
These were fishermen. They spent most of their adult lives in the boats. These were hardened sea dogs and they were ‘terrified’ by the storm. Must have been a big one. But when they woke him, they were rebuked.
What should they have done?! I figure they had 2 options -
a) wake Him
b) sit tight get wet
They just saw Jesus heal numerous people who asked for healing … ask and you receive. On more than one occasion it’s the person’s faith that Jesus says was the reason why the person was healed.
So sitting tight cannot be right … that means waking Him is the right option. So I figure the rebuke must because of the way they awoke Him.
Should they have sounded panic stricken? Was this the reason why they were deemed to be of little faith? They saw Jesus heal sick people but even they were amazed when He calmed the storm … they were not sure what He could do in these situations and these sea dogs knew this was a bad storm.
What is the message of Matthew 8:23?
What does it mean to have faith? In this case, what would you have done if you were one of the disciples in the boat?
I guess we should be calm in approaching Him. I don’t think they were rebuked for waking Him but because of how they awoke Him. Perhaps if they had not sounded so panic stricken? “Lord, there’s a huge storm. Can you do something about it?”

but he was sleeping…in the middle of a storm, with the noise of wind, rain, thunder, the creaking of the boat and the cries of the men, that was making even HIM wet (as I understand, most boats of that region in those days had no cabins). He was unafraid of the storm. Heck, I have a sneaking feeling He was enjoying it!
