Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The Papal Motto of Pope St. John Paul II – “Totus Tuus” (“All Yours”) was taken from St. Louis de Montfort’s “True Devotion” Pope JPII wrote that reading it was a turning point in his young life. We continue listening to Chapter 2 in “True Devotion”, beginning paragraph #83, #84 and at least part of #85 (to be continued tomorrow, God willing):
Fourth principle: It is more humble to have an intermediary with Christ
  1. It is more perfect because it supposes greater humility to approach God through a mediator rather than directly by ourselves. Our human nature, as I have just shown, is so spoilt that if we rely on our own work, effort and preparedness to reach God and please Him, it is certain that our good works will be tainted and carry little weight with Him. They will not induce Him to unite Himself to us or answer our prayers. God had His reasons for giving us mediators with Him. He saw our unworthiness and helplessness and had pity on us. To give us access to His mercies He provided us with powerful advocates, so that to neglect these mediators and to approach His infinite holiness directly and without help from any one of them, is to be lacking in humility and respect towards God who is so great and holy. It would mean that we have less esteem for the King of kings than for an earthly king or ruler, for we would not dare approach an earthly king without a friend to speak for us.
  2. Our Lord is our Advocate and our Mediator of redemption with God the Father. It is through Him that we must pray with the whole Church, triumphant and militant. It is through Him that we have access to God the Father. We should never appear before God, our Father, unless we are supported by the merits of His Son, and, so to speak, clothed in them, as young Jacob was clothed in the skin of the young goats when He appeared before His father Isaac to receive His blessing.
  3. But have we no need at all of a mediator with the Mediator himself? Are we pure enough to be united directly to Christ without any help? …God willing, we’ll continue this tomorrow)
Let us pray with these two “Champions of Mary” that we may grow closer to Jesus through Mary today. Jesus we trust in You! Mary, Mother of the Church Pray for us. Saints Louis and John Paul II, pray for us! May we praise God, the Holy Trinity within as Mary and all His Saints have done on earth, and continue now in Heaven.

Thank for this reflection, @MariaChristi!

St. John Paul II was truly a champion of the Blessed Mother here on Earth. He brought the people to Mary, and Mary to the people. The beautiful phrase “Totus Tuus” which he promoted during his pontificate is something that I cherish in my heart. He was a true example of what it meant to be a “Champion of Mary”. I can’t wait to see Our Blessed Mother and our Beloved Pope St. John Paul II in Heaven soon!

Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us!
Pope St. John Paul II, pray for us!

IOANNES PAULUS PP. II
REDEMPTORIS MATER
On the Blessed Virgin Mary
in the life of the Pilgrim Church

Blessing

Venerable Brothers and dear Sons and Daughters,
Health and the Apostolic Blessing.

INTRODUCTION
  1. The Mother of the Redeemer has a precise place in the plan of salvation, for “when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’” (Gal. 4:4-6)
With these words of the Apostle Paul, which the Second Vatican Council takes up at the beginning of its treatment of the Blessed Virgin Mary,1 I too wish to begin my reflection on the role of Mary in the mystery of Christ and on her active and exemplary presence in the life of the Church. For they are words which celebrate together the love of the Father, the mission of the Son, the gift of the Spirit, the role of the woman from whom the Redeemer was born, and our own divine filiation, in the mystery of the "fullness of time."2

Dear GioG12,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, Pope St. John Paul II – certainly by his example of holiness and his writing have brought Mary into the hearts of many people by God’s Grace. May we continue to Listen to God as He speaks through His Saints. In our day, when so many are forgetting the unique union Mary has with Jesus her Son, may we all learn to be in some way a “Champion of Mary” too, by God’s Grace.

Dear stoplooklisten,

Thanks for the beautiful picture of Pope St. John Paul II and for your “heart” letting us know your own love for Mary as both Saints Louis de Montfort and Pope St. John Paul II loved her on earth and continue now to love her in heaven now.

Dear Erundi,

Thanks for your “heart”, to let us know that you appreciate the words of St. Louis de Montfort in “True Devotion” and are encouraged by the way in which he and St. John Paul II have loved Mary so much and were her “Champions” in their defense of her in their personal example of holiness and in their writings to make her better known by all.

May we sincerely ask for and receive from God the Graces we need, to be “Champions of Mary” in our day – may we too defend Mary our Mother against those who would deface her statues and fail to recongnize her dignity as Mother of God. May we help others in any way we can, to understand how important Mary is to God’s Plan for our salvation.

Dear hazcompat,

Yes, how important it is to listen to Pope St. John Paul II’s encyclical “On the Blessed Virgin in the life of the Pilgrim Church”. He begins with Scripture for he and St. Louis de Montfort were steeped in God’s Word and learned from the Holy Spirit the Truth of Mary’s role in the Church:
… I too wish to begin my reflection on the role of Mary in the mystery of Christ and on her active and exemplary presence in the life of the Church. For they are words which celebrate together the love of the Father, the mission of the Son, the gift of the Spirit, the role of the woman from whom the Redeemer was born, and our own divine filiation, in the mystery of the "fullness of time."
May each of us learn as the saints learned to LISTEN to God’s Word and do the truth we hear – even as Mary our Mother listened to Jesus’ words and actions and pondered all in her heart.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your Faithful with the Fire of Your Love! Jesus we trust in You! Mary, Mother of the Church pray for us.
