Can you explain this term? What sort of situations can it refer to? Could it refer to Protestants?

If my Latin serves me correctly, the phrase means something like “hatred of the faith.” I don’t recall ever seeing this phrase in any Catholic documents or teaching, though (whether to refer to protestants or to anyone else). Where did you encounter this phrase?

I suppose it could refer to the original people who invented protestantism (Luther, Calvin, etc), and to some modern anti-Catholics. But I think most protestants today don’t give Catholicism much thought at all.

It does mean hatred of the faith. It’s used to indicate someone killing someone of the Catholic faith out of their faith. (I.E. a radical Muslim killing a Catholic because of his Muslim faith.)

It is one of the causes for beatification.

You can read a small exert here but it’s in Italian I think. In Odium fidei

It translates to:
Hatred of the faith(in odium fidei) is a term Latin can be translated in Italian as in hatred of the faith .
This term is used by the Catholic Church in causes of beatification when the ’ killing of one of his followers took place “in hatred of the faith”, ie a non-Catholic who has killed a Catholic as a matter of faith.

I have encountered this phrase in discussing martyrdom with various people, and it seems to be the criteria for proclaiming one a martyr. That is, a person who is killed in odium fidei is a martyr.

My interest in whether, from a Catholic perspective, a Protestant could be a martyr killed in odium fidei stems from my understanding that this phrase means something different from in odium ecclesia.
