Offer Communion for another person

My brother & I were both raised Catholic, but he has since fallen away from the Church. Often times at Communion at Holy Mass I will offer my presence there and receipt of the Holy Eucharist for him, silently praying, “Lord, as you offer this sacrifice for me that I may live, so I offer it for my bother, that he may return to the Church and live.” Is this an acceptable thing to do? If not, why not?
 
I do it all the time.

Christ’s sacrifice on the cross had benefits for us; our sacrifices and prayers can have benefits for others.
 
Yes, it is acceptable and laudable. It is also a good practice to “put” (through prayer) your brother in the chalice and on the paten/ciborium along with the bread and wine that will be consecrated. I learned something like this “Eternal father, along with this bread, wine and drop of water, I put in to the chalice and ciborium (name intention).” Personally, I always include my deceased father in the chalice (“Blood of Christ, freeing souls from purgatory, save us”). I think that what you are doing is the absolute best thing you could ever possibly do for your brother. In God’s time, it will have its effect. Always have a strong hope, there is nothing as powerful as the Mass.

I would have thought it implausible that you could receive communion ‘for your brother’. Maybe somebody can answer this question in a more enlightened manner. However, if you are concerned about family members, whether faith fallen or without faith, I would strongly recommend the ‘Conversion Prayer’ contained in the Devotion of the Divine Mercy. Jesus Himself revealed to Saint Faustina that: “When you say this prayer, with a contrite heart and faith on behalf of some sinner, I will give that person the grace of conversion. Say in front of the Image of Divine Mercy; O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You”.

Stumblesalot: I think the OP meant offering his/her communion for the brother’s intention. Sometimes it is worded that way.

I do it a lot. I recommend you to keep doing it for your brother. The most Holy Communion is priceless.
