We are under an obligation to provide for the needs of the Church, but there is no set amount. Give what you can, according to your conscience.

St. Paul says, “Do not impoverish yourself.”
A recommendation from one parish priest was one hour’s wages. This is approximately 5% of income. For those who tithe, the remaining 5% can be given to a charity of choice, or “God’s people.”
How much each of us contributes to the Church is a matter of personal conscience.

Such an excellent question that many people do know the answer to and do not take the time to look it up. It has long since been that we are to give tithes (10% of income earned) to the Church. This is not easy for many, but can be done to the best of your ability. Budgeting it into your weekly finances is what I do for my family of 7 (we live on a firefighter’s salary and still live well, but within our means - I make it a priority to give as close to 10% as I can).

Stupid question, but when one says “income earned” do they mean after taxes? I’ve been giving 10% (more or less) after taxes.

my hubby and i are both in school full time, with 2 children ages 10 and 7. (i am about to graduate this spring) 😃 but for right now since he was laid off from his job last feb, and i am the only one that works part time from home. we give a small amount each week. its not much, but i also give my time. my daughters are alter servers, i help run the religious article shop, and help with childrens education for the parish on sundays. my hubby is not catholic, but extremely supportive for the girls and i.

While I have known individuals who claim to tithe pre-tax, I tithe post tax. This is the amount of income that I see. The tithe goes into a box from which I draw an hour’s wage each Sunday for the envelope. The rest of the money goes to charities of choice, or God’s people.
10% of my tax return goes into the tithe box.

I am going to qualify my above statement. I have been much less diligent in recent years when it comes to tithing. When I did use the method mentioned above, I had a pretty box that I used. I glued a Widow’s mite (a gift from one of the requests for help that I received) to the box. Living overseas means envelopes are not used and taxes are not withdrawn from my income.

the right amount is that which represents a sacrifice, even a token one, which prayerfully acknowledges that all you have is gift from God, and that you owe something from the fruits of your labor to the Church and God’s poor in acknowledgement of that gift. Amount is not as important as the spirit of love in which it is given.

1 hr’s wages per week sounds like a reasonable place to start. If you have extra money some paychecks, maybe you do 1.5-2 hrs.
