I was born with Spina Bifida and I have been talking to people from my church about it recently. They keep telling me to offer up my suffering. The issue is, I don’t see many of the things I “go through” as suffering. It’s just my life. My question is, can I still offer it up just because other people see it a something to “suffer” through or does it need to be me suffering?

Yes. You can. I had epilepsy for years and I just came to accept it as part of life, but I could still offer it up.

It’s not a matter of you accepting that this is your life, it’s more that you know that there is stuff you can’t do or are prevented from doing, and that you may experience pain that most people don’t.

One example for me is that I loved to kayak. I couldn’t do it until recently though because of seizure risks. I just had to offer up that I wasn’t able to kayak for years. I am now fortunately and I’m so thankful for that.

My arthritis is something I deal with as part of my life. I have strong pain killers but seldom take them as I’m so used to much of the pain that I don’t bother with the meds much. I don’t complain to God about those knees much, nor about the mental illnesses which have left me unable to work. Just because something is just part of life doesn’t mean we cannot offer it up to God, to join it with the sufferings of our Lord and Savior on the Cross. I cannot walk like most people - offer it up. Got a paper cut - offer it up. I’m disabled - offer it up. My hands hurt because of PMR, tiredness, or overwork - offer it up. My back is uncomfortable - offer it up. My coffee is not hot enough - offer it up. Anything that is in the least inconvenient, difficult, or painful - offer it up.

Absolutely,

By beginning each day with a TOTAL offering of ALL of our thoughts, words and deeds to the Sacred Heart of Jesus [I do so through Mary]; we are giving back to God what he gifted to us: our, mind,s intellects, freewill and hearts; and that friend is a VERY good thing.
