We can see that Christ was the Virgin Mary’s only Son because if James were her son, she would not have needed the disciple John to take her in. As he was dying on the cross, Christ said “Behold your mother” to John and to His mother He said, “Woman, behold your son.”

I have had Protestants argue that John was another son of Mary, and that “behold your mother” and “behold your son” were just Jesus’ way (as He was dying an agonizing death) of reminding John to take care of mom. Ponder this a bit and you’ll see just how breathtakingly foolish this interpretation is, but at least it fits in with various Protestant beliefs. Like a square peg fits in a round hole…

Wait. Protestants think John was Christ’s brother as well? Oh, boy.

C’mon, somebody SHAKE ME, WAKE ME when it’s over!!

If everybody was as reasonable as John Calvin on this point, who said here,

“The word ‘brothers’, we have formerly mentioned, is employed, agreeably to the Hebrew idiom, to denote any relatives whatever; and, accordingly, Helvidius displayed excessive ignorance in concluding that Mary must have had many sons, because Christ’s brothers are sometimes mentioned.”
(Harmony/Commentary of Matthew, Mark & Luke, Vol. 2 Matt. 13:55, 1562)

Now, to be fair, earlier in the commentary in Vol. 1, Calvin says that we can’t know for sure, because it involves things that would have occured after the Gospel account, but even he, a star-spangled Reformer, seems to favor Jerome’s Catholic teaching!

Now, you can read for free, Jerome’s excellent full-length expose on the issue of Mary’s Perpetual Virginity. Actually, I challenge anyone to attempt a solid refutation of it, it’s that good!! It’s here and it’s in effect!!

Magicsilence, you are very devout and pius for wanting to better understand this truth, and it speaks well of you that you are seriously considering the words of Scripture in reinforcing your faith! That’s awesome, and if you attentively read and digest St. Jerome’s writing on this, he will completely settle any doubts or disturbances you had!!

Everything said thus far and more is gone into in great detail by a highly esteemed Father of the Church!!
