I have a friend who is finally going give me a chance to teach her about the eucharist. she is of an evangelical pentecostal background so i want to be very cautious about how i explain it.

I was thinking about first just talking about john 6 and going from there.

I would appreciate any (name removed by moderator)ut from people with experience with this…

thanks

Hi Santaro75, 🙂
I would recommend using
1Cor.11: 26 For as often as you shall eat this bread, and drink the chalice, you shall shew the death of the Lord, until he come. 27 Therefore whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man prove himself: and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of the chalice. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the body of the Lord. 30 Therefore are there many infirm and weak among you, and many sleep.
Verse 30 is quite clear regarding the consequences of denying the Body of Christ.

With love,
George

I think i blew it already. she pressured me into tell her about it so i started with john 6. apparently she had done her homework already and assured me that he was not talking literally and that his flesh is not bread.

pray for me though i think she lost interest

Did she give you a chance to show that He was speaking literally?

Hi Santaro -

Here is a chapter from a church father named Justin Martyr. It was written ca. 160 AD. The history of this document is this…Justin was an apologist in the East and Rome.

He is the first to write any document outside the church. Previously all the early chistians had written to other church members. This document Justin wrote to the Emporer Titus Caesar to try to persuade him to stop persecuting christians. It didn’t work, which is how Justin obtained the surname “Martyr.”

Ask your friend this question: who would know church doctrine better…the first christians who gave thier lives for what they believed, or people who taught doctrines starting 1400 years after this document?

Print out and read the whole thing if you have to. It has lots of good CATHOLIC stuff in it.

Justin Martyr First Apology Chapter 66

And this food is called among us Eukaristia (the Eucharist), of which no one is allowed to partake but the man who believes that the things which we teach are true, and who has been washed with the washing that is for the remission of sins, and unto regeneration, and who is so living as Christ has enjoined. For not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Saviour, having been made flesh by the Word of God, had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh. For the apostles, in the memoirs composed by them, which are called Gospels, have thus delivered unto us what was enjoined upon them; that Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, said, “This do ye in remembrance of Me, this is My body;” and that, after the same manner, having taken the cup and given thanks, He said, “This is My blood;” and gave it to them alone. Which the wicked devils have imitated in the mysteries of Mithras, commanding the same thing to be done. For, that bread and a cup of water are placed with certain incantations in the mystic rites of one who is being initiated, you either know or can learn.

i have had a problem getting her to pay attention. I uncovered the problem today. and i think the fact that she wont talk about it shows that she is ashamed of it.

She will not talk to me about apologetics because she is completely closed to Catholic doctrine. Not base on reason but based on the fact that it is Catholic. these people are taught from a very early age that all things catholic are damning. they are completely closed to it because it is Catholic. it doesn’t matter how much evidence or truth is involved.

crazy and frustrating. 😦

I’m leading a LifeNight tomorrow on spiritual warfare. I shall offer up some prayers for her.

You might also try the Early Church Fathers, in addition to scripture. Maybe it would bother her to know that the earliest Christians did indeed take it literally. Here is a gold mine for the Eucharist in scripture.

As we know from John 6:66, it is a hard teaching to understand, yet we must all try to keep these disciples from walking away, if we can.

Ask your friend in addition to Jesus saying I am the Bread of Heaven, This is My Body, and My Flesh is real food that Jesus was born in a city whose name means House of Bread and He was laid in a feeding trough. Coincidence? Naw…

that is awesome. I had never heard that before.

i think for the time being i have to let the lord take care of it. she will not talk about it. doesn’t care what i say. if i bring it up, she will say “I am not going to talk about this”. its her trump card.

oh well

2ti 2:23-26 “And avoid foolish and unlearned questions, knowing that they beget strifes. But the servant of the Lord must not wrangle: but be mild towards all men, apt to teach, patient, With modesty admonishing them that resist the truth: if peradventure God may give them repentance to know the truth, And they may recover themselves from the snares of the devil, by whom they are held captive at his will.”
