An acquaintance from one of the local parishes passed away Monday. I was going to go to the vigil or maybe funeral but both are while I’m at work and I can’t take off at all this week. I’m planning on sending a card to her husband but I thought I’d have a mass said for her at my own parish. Is it okay to have a mass said for someone if you’re not a family member or even close friend? Sorry I’m still new to this.

Not only is it okay, it is a very good thing to do for anyone!

Yes, it’s fine. If the husband is Catholic or otherwise okay with you having a Mass said for the deceased, you can send him the Mass card. If you are not sure he would welcome it (like he’s not Catholic) then have the Mass said but don’t send the card.

When my husband passed, people who didn’t know either of us in person had Masses said for him. I greatly appreciated the gesture.
