Okay to see Avengers Endgame?

So here’s my question:

I’ve already seen Avengers Endgame, which I thought was a good movie with one big exception: the fact that it contains uses of God’s name in vain (if you haven’t seen it there is a use of Jesus’ name in vain as well as two examples of the abuse of God’s name that is God followed by the d-word.) My dilemma therefore is essentially with these verbal abuses. Even though I’ve already seen the movie once last weekend (not knowing, and frankly a little surprised, that the movie would contain these types of verbal abuses) I had planned with someone who I have a close relationship with before the movie had even come out that I’d see it with them this upcoming weekend (in other words, they haven’t seen it yet but I’ve seen it once already).

If it was up to me I wouldn’t go again because of the uses of God’s name in vain. However, I also feel I should go because I told this person I’d go with them and I know they want to see the movie. What do people think?

I should also note that I’ve become more sensitive recently to uses of God’s name in vain. I think this may be a result of God speaking to me as a way of saying how much this stuff upsets him. For the record, normal swearing in a movie barely bothers me, but I consider this kind of stuff much worse.

Best to talk to a priest to avoid scrupulosity. But there was this thread:

Avengers: endgame Popular Media
I was wondering if anyone saw Avengers: Endgame? I haven’t seen it yet and was thinking of going with my mom. I read the parents guide and it said it had, “some strong sexuality” but it also said the sex and nudity rating was none so? If you saw the movie- was it innapropriate? I don’t really know what they mean by that. I would also like to add that avengers: infinity war had the same note (some strong sexuality) and I saw that movie, but I didn’t really think it did have that.

It is just a bad nonsensical movie that was poorly told.

Don’t take the Lords name in vain yourself. Say a little prayer when you hear others say it - like " Jesus I love you".

But if you were to try and avoid forms of media that use the name in vain you would be restricted pretty much to children’s movies. It’s fine to watch it.

Yes, it’s okay to go and see it.

If and when you do hear the Lord’s Name taken in vain, say softly or think “Admirable is the Name of God,” then when you have some quiet time for yourself later on, pray the Golden Arrow prayer, which is what I’ve been doing lately.

(SPOILERS) I thought Endgame was a great movie. It definitely has some Christian themes, such as sacrifice and faith, and there’s at least one Christ figure. I can’t wait to see it again 🙂

A few times of the use of Gods name in vain may be acceptable to watch, you can kind of close your mind and ears to it. But when its excessive like a gangster movie, then in my opinion it becomes problematic. Garbage in garbage out.

I havent seen the End Game although someone told me about it and from what they said I found a problem. COULD BE SPOILER: The problem I seen was that one of the characters killed himself(suicide) to do a good deed. One may not do evil so that good may come of it. Even in the first Avengers movie a character would have killed an innocent person so that good may come of it. Intrinsically evil acts like murder of an innocent and suicide, are sinful regardless of circumstances or intention. We cannot do evil so that good may come of it.

You shoulda dropped out of Marvel in Captain America, when Cap jumped on what he thought was a live grenade to save the rest of the men.

That’s all fine, but it doesn’t matter if all the characters in a movie act appropriately according to Catholic doctrine. It’s a movie with fictional characters. You can watch a movie and enjoy it without taking it as a model for your own behavior.

The Catholic News Service reviews ( www.catholicnews.com , select Movies under Extras), generally do NOT condemn a movie for a few uses of the Lord’s name in vain. Their rating for “Endgame” is A-III, which means appropriate for adult audiences.

Why ask the question if you’ve already seen it? If you want to see it again, go. If you don’t, don’t.

Honestly, before the Internet, people looked at a movie’s rating, read the description and made up their own minds as to whether or not it was worth the money to see. And after, whether their money was well spent or not.

Ask your parents and your priest what they think. Better yet, decide for yourself whether or not you want to go a second time.

I am going to see it this weekend… no SPOILERS please 😉
Hey, I want the spoilers!!! Is the “Endgame” really the end? Please, God, let it be the end!!! Let all the characters die so there will be no more and the actors can move on in their careers.

That would not be suicide since he did not throw the grenade. Neither would be someone who jumped in front of a bullet to protect someone else. Its different if one were to pull the trigger and kill himself in order to save lives.

If he had the ability to get away from the grenade instead of diving on it, it was attempted suicide. And he did.

Could not disagree more. His primary intent was not to kill himself, he was trying to prevent others from being hurt. In a split second decision it is always easy to say a person should have done this or that, unfortunately in some cases a decision must be made instantly.

I’m not saying he shouldn’t have done it.

My only question is: “What was his primary intent?”. If it is to die, then we would agree it is a suicide. IF it was to save others, then no.

That’s relevant to the moral question, to be sure, but it is not part of the definition of the word “suicide.”
