Hi would like to know why the contents of the ark of the covenant are different in the book of kings and Hebrews 9:4?

Hi Chis,
It would have been nice to give us the reference in Kings as well. I suppose you mean 1Kings 8,9, where it says that the arch contained only the tables of the law. We can only suppose that other things were added afterwards. There is no prohibition against that, as far as I can tell.

The Ark of the Covenant originally contained the gold jar with manna, Aaron’s staff, and the tablets. Aaron’s staff and the jar of manna went missing at the time of Kings, so only the tablets were left inside the Ark. The Bible doesn’t explain why they were lost.

I’d always figured the OT simply neglected to mention that the manna and Aaron’s staff were in the ark, and that Hebrews is where we learn that extra bit of information, which may have been remembered orally or simply revealed by God to the inspired author.
I’d never heard of the other things being lost at some point prior to the loss of the whole ark. Certainly I’d expect they were added at least a little later than the tablets, since the ark and the tablets were made when Aaron was still alive (the ark made by Aaron, of course) and before the manna was given.

The jar of manna was placed, “In front of the covenant” in Exodus 16.
***Moses said, “This is what the LORD has commanded. Keep a full omer of it for your future generations, so that they may see the food I gave you to eat in the wilderness when I brought you out of the land of Egypt." Moses then told Aaron, “Take a jar and put a full omer of manna in it. Then place it before the LORD *to keep it for your future generations.” As the LORD had commanded Moses, Aaron placed it in front of the covenant to keep it. (Exodus 16:32-34)
Aaron’s staff was placed, “I front of the covenant” in Numbers 17.
Then the LORD said to Moses: Put back Aaron’s staff in front of the covenant, for safe keeping as a sign to the rebellious, so that their grumbling against me may cease and they might not die. Moses did this. Just as the LORD had commanded him, so he did. (Numbers 17:25-26)
“In front of the covenant” is taken to have meant inside of the ark, next to the two tablets on which the ten commandments were written.
The reference to the rod and manna in Hebrews is pretty clear, but my very brief search did not turn up any references in the Talmud or Mishna or other Jewish writings about what could have been in the ark.

Thank you all for your (name removed by moderator)ut as I am from the opposite side of the world, there would be a time delay before I can post.
From all your references we can either assume that the manna and Aaron’s rod were no longer present in the ark at the time of Solomon and that Hebrews was quoting from the time of Moses.
OR that the rod and manna were in front of the ark which would explain how a staff could fit in the ark.
