I have just had a conversation with someone who had very strange views about the Bible and Theology in general. He didn’t believe in the Resurrection or the Trinity and he wasn’t a Jehovah’s Witness. He goes to both Protestent and Catholic Churches. He brought up an interesting argument for why Jesus wasn’t God. He said that in order for someone to rise from the dead or raise someone else from the dead he would have to have a greatly unique gift, to be an extraordinary man.

I then said yeah you have to be God wouldn’t you?

He said not necessarily because in the Old testament someone else raised someone from the dead. Someone who is not God. Therefore if it had been done before does that make the other person God too? He refused to tell me who it was and told me to research it myself as that would help me to learn so I’m asking…

Does anyone know if this has happened, where it is in the Old Testament and what repercussions, if any, does it have for faith in Jesus being God?

Thank you

Elijah raised the woman’s son, also a dead man who was burried in Elisha’s grave was raised when his body touched Elisha’s bones. Sorry, don’t have chapter & verse references. Try First & Second Kings.

2 Kings 4 for the woman’s son.

Hi AP Quinn, No one in the OT raised Themself from the dead. God did use others to perform ressurrections.

Concerning the Ressurrection of Jesus, all three members of the Trinity where involved.

The TRINITY IN THE RESURRECTION

God raised Jesus - Acts 5:30 Rom.4:24 "(Acts 2:24,32; 3:26; 4:10; 5:30; 10:40; 13:30;1 Cor.6:14; 2 Cor.4:14 ) 2 Cor.1:9

The Holy Spirit raised Jesus

Rom.8:11" But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. It is the H.Spirit that dwells in us, notice he says by his Spirit. . Paul makes a clear distinction between Christ the God/man, the Spirit and the Father.

God raised Jesus

Acts 5:30 Rom.4:24
Acts 2:24,32; 3:26; 4:10; 5:30; 10:40; 13:30 1 Cor.6:14; 2 Cor.4:14

The Son raised himself- Jn.2:19 …Destroy this temple and I will raise it up." v.21 he was speaking of the temple of his body. Jn.10:17’ Therefore does my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. 18: No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received from my Father". John 5:25 “Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.” As Jesus said he is the resurrection and the life. Later in Jn.6:39 he states This is the will of the Father who sent me, that all he has given me, I should lose nothing, but should raise it up on the last day."

Yeah I take your points. My friend argues that if some man with extraordinary abilities could raise someone from the dead then why couldn’t someone else with these abilities in the New Testament have raised Jesus from the dead and passed it off as if he had been raised by God.

He also claims that someone else apart from Jesus raised someone from the dead in the New Testament. Is this true?

Paul brought Eutychus back from the dead after he felt out of the window in Acts 20. Peter also raised Dorcas from the dead in Acts 9.

Something to keep in mind is that being raised from the dead is different from being resurrected. Those others who were raised from the dead died again.

Jesus was resurrected and dies no more, and ascended into Heaven. He has a glorified body now.
