How does Noah’s ark, the giving of the Ten Commandments and The Joseph story prefigure Christ and His work?

The 10 Commandments were the written word of God.
Christ was the Word of God, made flesh.

Noah and his family were saved from death during the Flood by the power of God.
Baptism now saves us from death by the power of God.

What you’re looking into now is called “Typology”. Here is a short link to help explain:
kensmen.com/catholic/typology.html

Here is a longer link with more info:
newadvent.org/cathen/15107a.htm

Typology really made the bible come alive for me, and made me see how there was much more going on than I ever thought when studying with Protestants.

If you like this kind of thing, go to Barnes and Noble and pick up a book (any book) by Dr. Scott Hahn. If you’ve never read his work, you’re in for one of the best experiences your faith has had yet!

In addition to Ryan’s great advice above, I’d also recommend “Making Senses Out of Scripture” by Mark Shea. It is an easy introduction to the Scriptures in general and OT typology in particular.

(BTW RyanL, thanks for the compliment a few threads back. You’re not a bad apologist yourself!)

Joseph (OT) was a dreamer who was able to interpret dreams correctly and so was able to save his family from destruction by famine while he was in Egypt. Joseph (NT), the foster father of Jesus, had dreams which warned him to go to Egypt to save his family from destruction at the hand of Herod.

Covenant, covenant, covenant…

God makes a covenant with Noah not to destroy mankind by flood.

The Commandments were given to the Israelites as a sign of the covenant God had made with them.

Joseph… ok, I’m not sure off the top of my head how to make him fit the covenant theme, but you can do it.

Jesus of course is the sign of the new covenant.
