I recently came into possession of an authentic WWI rosary (I also have a reproduction that Rugged Rosaries makes which is beautiful too)… my question is, what did these rosaries originally come in? Meaning, did they have a little case that the men in the war kept these in? I haven’t been able to figure that out as I would like to find something similar to what it was originally kept in if possible. This were all manufactured I believe in 1916.

I was thinking that it might have been a little coin purse type of container (similar to what your grandma may have used), but I’m not sure of those would have been around then. I know it was not the zipper type rosary pouch that we see now days.

Hopefully, someone more familiar with antiques will know or can help.

Well, that could work if it was the Australian Army. That gives me an idea though.

I wonder if that is an old Gutta Percha rosary?

What search term did you put it?

Did he talk about the original containers they were kept in? I see the video you posted is over an hour long. Not sure of he mentions that or not.

Can’t remember if he talks about the containers, I know he went into detail on how the soldiers in WW1 kept a “combat rosary” (made of gun metal) and used it daily to get through the War.

Maybe not… maybe just finding a small leather coin type purse will be the best thing. Strange that you can find these rosaries that are over 100 years old, but not a case, but maybe they just dispatched them in an envelop or something and the men got whatever they had to keep them in.

Heck, I could take an old Sucrets tin, hit it with a torch and burn off the paint, and then use that. Will have an interesting color to it. I used to do this for a flint and steel container for my primitive camping days.

An old Tobacco tin would work too like you say. Put a handkerchief in either one to cut down on the noise that and that may be sort of authentic. A little bulky for the pocket, but it would work.

All good possibilities. Hope you are able to find something suitable and workable.

check at an army navy surplus store. I’m going to leave this thread now because I’m really close to coveting my neighbors goods (Your Rosary). Nice find 🙂

That is really cool and amazing to find. To be able to hold something that a young man used over 100 years ago to give him peace and comfort.

I am a Convert to Catholicism, and I find that the
Rosary a GREAT prayer, it has helped me in the
process of sanctification and towards a more
consistent Christian walk!!

I have to admit that I never was a big rosary person. Meaning, I knew how to pray it, but I always found reasons not to (e.g. can’t remember the mysteries, etc). This lent, I want to change that and make it a part of my daily spiritual life and say at least 1 rosary per day. I was able to create a really nice sheet that could be used by anyone to pray the rosary. This fits nicely on one piece of paper (two sided) and I will try and see if I can post an image of it for anyone who may be interested. I have it in PDF format, but I might be able to convert these to images to post as well.

@GLam1761, I have to agree with you that it is a great tool to help all of us toward sanctification and a consistent Christian walk.
