It has been a while since I have posted on these forums and I am happy to be back. I wanted share with the Eastern Catholicism forum an ancient East Syriac chant which is considered to be one of the oldest or possibly the oldest Christian chant from India. The chant in question is known as Baru Mariam or “Son of Mary” and it is unique to the Knanaya Community, an ethnic group who are said to have arrived to India in the 4th century from Syria and connected the Church of St. Thomas to the East Syriac tradition. The chant is extremely beautiful and in the modern age has been adopted by other communities as well. The Knanaya use the chant as a final blessing during their wedding ceremonies to solidify the union. The chant has 49 couplets in total but not all are sung during weddings. I have posted three links below to versions of the chant available on Youtube. The following is a translation of the wedding version of the chant:

BARU (the Son of) MARIAM (Mary) BARU (the Son of) MARIAM (Mary)
BARU (the Son of) ALAHA (God) D’YILDATH MARIAM (whom Mary bore) [2X]
(1) OWI SOWCEH (His Branch has sprouted) BARU (even the Son of) MARIAM (Mary) ACH (according to) NWIYUTHA (prophecy) BARU (the Son of) MARIAM (Mary) [Chorus: 1x]
(2) QANDES (He sanctified) MAIYA (the water) BARU (the Son of) MARIAM (Mary) B’MAMODITHEH (by his baptism) BARU (the Son of) MARIAM (Mary) [Chorus: 1x]
(3) ICAL (He ate) PIṢKHA (the Passover meal) BARU (the Son of) MARIAM (Mary) AM (with) TALMIDOW (his disciples) BARU (the Son of) MARIAM (Mary) [Chorus: 1x]
(4) SANDAR (He sent) RUḤA (the Spirit) BARU (the Son of) MARIAM (Mary) PARAQLETHA (even the Comforter) BARU (the Son of) MARIAM (Mary) [Chorus: 1x]
