I’m in a second marriage and a few years ago I began to go to Mass. After much learning and discovery, I asked the Church to declare my first marriage null with the intent that I would become a Catholic, which they did. However my wife refuses to let the Church investigate her first marriage so as far as I know I won’t be able to be confirmed for the foreseeable future.

We were married by a JP which raises two questions for me: 1) Is our marriage sacramentally invalid? 2) Is the conjugal act a sin for us?
 
Talk to the parish priest. He will talk even to non-catholics with no hesitation. There is no where near enough info in your post to allow even an educated guess. 🙂
