I understand that any sacramental confession must be done person to person, but is there any problem with having a spiritual director that advises only through e-mail (or telephone)?

It certainly isn’t ideal, but it will work if you can’t find anyone who will work for you in person. I wouldn’t consider it a long-term solution, and I wouldn’t try to work through any major things (such as vocations, or serious spiritual problems) through the phone or e-mail.

Why? I am wondering if your comments are based on a failed attempt–they sound like BTDT words.

My spiritual director of 11 years had to go away for further study for a few years. We communicated by e-mail and occasionaly by phone. It certainly is not ideal. We can’t really have a decent conversation and sometimes he is unable to respond quickly to e-mails. We also miss the non-verbal communication that we both found very valuable. He was able to come home occasionaly and then we would talk but his year I haven’t seen him since the summer. But all that will end in June when he comes home…for good.
