I was reading in another post about something like this, but I had a question on it.

First of all, is it against the Church for a Priest to break his vows in order to marry in the Catholic church? I want to say no, but I could very easily be mistaken. And second, do you believe that this would be acceptable? If a priest truly finds someone whom he loves and cherishes, should/can he leave the priesthood to start a family with her? Or could it be a test from God? Could He have truly intended this relationship from the beginning, and it would better suit His plan for them to marry? Is it simply something the priest should ignore? This question would go for anyone in any order (sister, brother, etc.) What are your thoughts regarding any of this?

I’m not sure where I stand, basically because I’m not sure of the “rules” regarding this…I want to say that, after amazing amounts of prayer and meditation, the priest should follow his heart because God, above all, always wants us to be happy, and if the priest would truly be happier married to her than the church, shouldn’t that be the path he choses? Or is it too late for any decision like that? …I really have no clue:) But does anyone have any thoughts or information on this?

Well, I am quite sure a Priest does not take vows… So he would not have to break anything…
If a Priest feels he was wrong in the choice of his vocation and honestly believes he should be a married man, he should go to his Bishop and ask for guidance and help. A Priest can leave the Priesthood to be Married, but he would no longer be a practicing “Priest” though the Ordination into Priesthood leaves an indellible mark on his soul.

Religious priests (Jesuits, Dominicans, etc.) take vows, diocesan priests make promises. Either can be dispensed from these through the laicization process. It takes an additional action to release him from his promise/vows of celibacy.

Should a priest fall in love and wish to marry it is possible for him to petition for laicization.
