This reminds me of America’s Funniest Home Videos- Catholic Mass Edition. Last Sunday when I tried to be so serious and respectful slowly walking up to the Deacon, God had a laugh! The Body was running short so the Deacon and Priest were flustered trying to get more. When I received on the tongue, the Deacon put it on there weird and so I had to quickly take it in so it wouldn’t fall. Well, my tongue and teeth touched his finger. The Deacon paused and looked at his finger in absolute disgust! Has this happened to you?
Do you have a funny moment where God might be laughing with us also to share?:rotfl:

I have been bitten before when distributing as an EMHC. I think that it is not that trivial to receive COTT. I looked at myself in the mirror. I noticed that if I open the mouth the way I think it would open enough, then I realize that the opening is quite small for the Host of the size that we use in our parish. However, if I make sure that my mouth is open enough to allow for proper reception it feels wide open and it feels like I am sticking my tongue to the priest. Now I just have to remember that my feeling does not matter too much and that I should open my mouth wide.

Sorry; no funny stories, but a followup question:
Did the Deacon get a tetanus shot?

Thanks for bringing that up. I’m surprised no one has before. I don’t know why they produced the larger hosts, especially since the norm is supposed to be on the tongue. But even with CITH, you’d still want to place It in your own mouth in one piece, I would think.

In all honesty I do not think that the host is that large. I just feel like my mouth is huge even if it is not so. My dentist always complains that my mouth is not that big even if I apparently have a large face. My wife and my son receive the same Host without issues. Your comment about the CITH is very valid.

more often than not in the last 30 years or so. It is so uncommon to encounter any lay communion minister, or sadly many deacons, who know how to properly communicate on the tongue that I have given up something that is rather important to me. I know I am safe at my own parish with my own priest but experience around and about has convinced me prudence demands reception in the hand in an unfamiliar place.

I’ve inadvertently licked the priests finger a couple of times but nothing like biting them!

Eww 😃 I’ve bitten the teeth cleaners loads of times, also “licked” the priest once (:rotfl: it sounds so funny saying that!), but never bitten. Oh how embarrassing :rotfl:

coz in America, bigger is better? back in the Philippines we always had smaller hosts and i was surprised the first few times how bit it was over on this side of the Pacific

Sometimes the priests fingers just touches my lips. This is because I’m a little shy to bring my tounge out all the way.

Oh, and there is one time when I closed my mouth a little too early. Didn’t stop the EMHC though, she did her best to shove it in

I always receive on the tongue as well. There are priests and Extraordiary Mininsters of the Eucharist who know how to do it very well and there are no problems. But some are definitely put off by it, and those are the ones who tend to either barely put it in your mouth or stick it too far in. I do find it helps if you keep your head still. Don’t “help” them by bending down or moving your head in any way.

I also go to a Latin Mass every Sunday where we all kneel down to receive. There is never a problem with that. So I think the major problem is that we are all standing. That makes it very awkward to receive on the tongue. When you’re kneeling down, you lift your head and your mouth is an easy receptacle. Never a problem.

Good point. It’s easier for the server holding the paten too.

I’ve always thought that the Hosts we had 20+ years ago were smaller than they are now.

Personally, I find the slightly larger hosts easier to place on a tongue without touching anything. And yes, it is much, much easier to place a host on a tongue if the person is substantially lower than you. Standing people makes it harder. It is easy to distribute in the hospital, where they are all in beds. 🙂

I agree about sticking your tongue out at the priest. You must stick the tongue out far enough that you feel hopelessly rude.

Last week we had a retired priest substitute at daily mass when our pastor was away. I much prefer to receive in the hand, the symbolism of holding out empty hands is meaningful to me (just my personal feelings). But every now and then I sense that Jesus is asking me to receive on the tongue this one time, probably to practice obedience. Well, what’s the whole point of receiving communion at all if you’re not going to be obedient to what you think He wants? So I did.

But the poor priest dropped the Host on my, er, upper chest. He looked down, then he looked me in the eye and said, “I’ll let you take care of that.” He was a wise old priest, no dummy. We both ended up laughing. And I told Jesus, “You knew this would happen!” He’s so good at teaching us humility.

I guess it happens. Was that you here? 🙂

I don’t know why they don’t use patens.

Sorry to get off topic, but…(OP: or is this still on topic?)

During a Sunday evening Mass a number of years ago, there was a hell of a thunder storm.
The First Reading was from the Prophet Isaiah ( Isaiah 6:1>>>): “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and His train filled the temple…”. At the point where the Prophet says: “And the foundations of the threshold shook at the voice of him who called…”, the loudest peal of thunder of the lot hit us, and the little stone church shook…
