Why is it a one-way street in that we are personally incapable of gaining heaven no matter what actions we take or how hard we try, (it’s a gift from God), yet on the other hand we ARE fully capable of losing salvation by our actions and thus damning ourselves to eternal torment? In the same vein, we can have a lifetime of good actions, but if we mess up once and commit a mortal sin and die, we go to hell forever? Come on!

Hi,

The freedom to choose to love and serve God OR to choose to ignore Him and have things our way IS a very two-way street. That we are not capable of raising ourselves to God’s level on our own, is not a matter of God being unfair. Remember, He chose to create us out of nothing. He is God, after all, and we are not. Because we can choose to serve ourselves in place of God and end up in hell, God is somehow giving us a raw deal?

If we live a life centered on Him, we are not likely to sin mortally and go to hell. If He is the context of our life, He will take care of us. He really loves us. Now it’s my turn to say: come on! The closest thing He has ever had to a chip on His shoulder, is His cross.
