A few years ago, I had a public debate at one of our local colleges with a (non-instrumental) Church of Christ preacher. The subject was authority. We had a mutual goal of showing people that differences can be discussed passionately, but respectfully, and members of the audience complimented us on this after.

The hall was filled with almost all Church of Christ members, with a priest friend and three other Catholics supporting me. One kid even showed up with my opponent’s face printed on a t-shirt, as if we were at a wrestling match!

I posted the links below. I thought it went very well. My opponent (Shahe) is a more practiced public speaker, for sure. He used a research partner at his table and I went solo. We argued two affirmatives. Shahe attempted to establish the Bible alone and my affirmative asserted that an infallible teaching authority is needed for the Church that Christ established. The format for each affirmative allowed for the opponent’s negative and a closing rebuttal from the affirmative side.

Here are links if you want to watch. I’d welcome any (name removed by moderator)ut and ask that you have mercy if I slipped anywhere, as it is easy to do in a high-pressure debate situation. We debated, with breaks, for a few hours. Each of these links has three videos, one for each segment of each affirmative.

Let me know what you think. My one big self-critique is that I spoke a bit too fast (nerves). My cadence is under control now, but being my first (and only) public debate, I was just a tiny bit nervous!

Shahe’s research partner, Clint, has an awesome voice. Coolest preacher voice I’ve ever heard. I stay in touch with Clint on Facebook, but have lost touch with Shahe.
