Hey,

I’m looking to eventually take some courses, hopefully culminating in a masters in theology somewhere. I’m not really rolling in money right now, so is there a reasonable online school for pursuing a masters in theology? If not, what should I look for in person?

I don’t have any schools for you. I just want to ask you a question. Have you been studying on your own time? Religious studies/.Theology can be tough especially if you want to get a masters degree. I’ve been studying all sorts of subjects for years, on my own time, and to tell you the truth I haven’t even scratched the surface.
 
Check out the Cardinal Newman Society. Some universities are more Catholic than others.

Then check out the better Catholic universities to see which ones offer online classes.

Holy Apostles College and Seminary is a regionally accredited (the gold standard), Cardinal Newman Society endorsed (there are only a couple of dozen) college which offers the MA Theology entirely through distance learning. I can tell you that it is no cakewalk, and a high level of scholarship is required. However, I’m starting my second semester and am very satisfied with the courses so far. You can take out a low interest federal Stafford loan which you don’t have to begin repaying until 6 months after you graduate.

Considering that I live in a rural area and the nearest brick and mortar school offering a comparable degree program is at least two hours away, I would be unable to pursue my passion of a degree program in Theology were it not for programs like Holy Apostles’. There are others as well, but at three hundred-something dollars per credit hour, Holy Apostles has just about the lowest tuition around as well.

FYI the Cardinal Newman Society approval is based on an assessment of whether or not a college teaches Ex Corde Ecclesiae. There are many better known schools which are not on the list- Notre Dame, Holy Cross, St. John’s, Marquette, Seton Hall…

I’m pretty sure Regis has an online program.

Before I respond to this quote, I would like to thank you all for giving me some resources to look into. I really, really appreciate it.

To Sacred Heart, I’m currently finishing up a MS and probably going to begin a PhD program. I’m one of those weird people who just love school. If I ever won the lottery, I’d spend my time gathering degree after degree after degree. I’m not terribly worried about difficulty. In fact, I hope for something challenging 🙂

That’s great. keep on studying.
 
If you are planning to pursue a PhD in Theology, you will generally first need to complete a Master’s degree in Theology, if your current Master’s is in another discipline which it seems to be, being an MS and not an MA or M.Div.

CDU has a good reputation for academic rigor, and is on the Cardinal Newman Society list. The only issue with the school is that it is not regionally accredited, which means you can’t get a federal Stafford Loan to pay your tuition there. It’s also generally difficult to qualify for entrance to a PhD program if the Master’s degree is from a non-regionally accredited school, although there may be more flexibility in Theology.

That “Top 10 Online Catholic Colleges and Universities” list seems pretty subjective, and not all of the schools listed offer theology via distance learning. I would stick with the Cardinal Newman Society list, in general.
