I had gone to my sister’s parish instead of my own for the Easter Vigil, and when I went up to receive I had both species. When I went to the cup I was surprised as there was more wine in it than I was used to. I hesitated with the cup already tilted and the EMHC tilted it a little more for me to drink. I got a little on my upper lip and absentmindedly wiped it off. I could feel the shock of the EMHC, and went back to the pew with the side of my finger in my mouth trying to salvage it. Should I go to confession before Sunday? I know it’s not a mortal sin as I wasn’t thinking, but I also know that treating the Precious Blood disrespectfully is a Really Big Deal.

You said you know it’s not a mortal sin, so relax. You said you did so absentmindedly, not disrespectfully. Be at peace.

No need to go to confession for this incident. It was an accident and you didn’t intend for it to happen.

Remember, God knows what is in your heart, what you are thinking and your intentions.

I think you handled the situation well.

Be at peace. But if Confession will make you feel better, then by all means go.

God Bless

At the Eucharist, I follow the practice of St Cyril and wipe on my finger tips what precious blood is on my lips and make the sign of the cross over my eyes and ears, with my moistened finger tips.

interesting…

I have been instructed that the EMHC should not be assisting anyone with drinking from the cup. The EMHC should not be tilting the cup or putting the cup to anyone’s lips for them.

I was taught to hand the cup to the communicant, they drink and then hand the cup back. My hand is never far from the cup lest it fall but I don’t assist anyone or tip the cup for them to drink more.

That is how I was trained. .

As a general rule, if you can’t see it or tell what it is (in other words, clearly identify it as the precious blood) then it ceases to be sacred. So the tiny amount that you might get on your lips (or finger) isn’t something you should really worry about - especially since evaporation rapidly takes care of the problem by itself - although one should of course always err on the side of caution. That said, there was nothing wrong or disrespectful about what you did.

Maybe we should have less Extraordinary monsters being careless with the Eucharist.

Not your fault. Don’t worry about it.

The Precious Blood becomes less sacred? What? That’s the problem we have today, making excuses for everything. The Precious Blood is precious, every drop. That’s why its imperative to be absolutely certain not a drop of it or a crumb of the Body of our Lord is wasted.

While your statement reflects an admirable attitude, what InThePew stated is correct Church teaching. If it isn’t clearly detectable, it isn’t the Sacred Species.

Yes but if you can’t tell what it is then it’s no longer sacred.

I don’t know what CJ(name removed by moderator)my felt, but this happened to me once. I agonized over it for days, and it still makes me shudder. I also have full facial hair. I felt if I confessed it would be a scruple, as for many of the reasons mentioned above it was a mistake.
Now when I think about it (I still do) I imagine myself as one of the soldiers in the Praetorium. Soldiers who may have been saved by the very blood they released during the flogging And I hope they were.
Or Longinus. It’s good to remember him this week, after the Divine Mercy Sunday.
And I know, while this was a terrible incident for me, and probably CJ(name removed by moderator)my, we all are guilty of the shedding of Jesus’ blood for our salvation. And we, with all our bumbles and mistakes and sins and treachery are why God Almighty came to earth in the form of a man and shed his life.

Maybe this alone, this humiliating experience for me, is why Christ, whose blood it is and was shed, allowed this thing to happen.

Oh yeah, I was seriously bothered by it. And for it to happen at the Easter Vigil of all times! And then I got sick and couldn’t attend Mass for the Divine Mercy. 😦 The memory of it will remind me of my humility every time I go up now though.
