Ok I would like to do a baby name poll of sorts. We are expecting our seventh baby in March. We know he is a boy - our fourth little man:). I am very undecided on the name. We had first decided on Abram Joseph (Abe). However, with his due date being March 25(Annunciation) and fact that he will very likely come between feast of St. Joseph and the Annunciation, I thought Gabriel Joseph(Gabe) would be fitting!! Abe and Gabe are very similar sounding and I thought Gabe had a special meaning behind it so I was leaning that way. However, as I have posted before, my 12 year old son does not like Gabriel at all. He thinks Gabriel is too feminine but also just likes Abe better. I think he would come to accept whatever we choose eventually, but I just received a comment yesterday that is now making me second guess myself. A good friend of ours made the comment to me “So I hear he is going to be Gay now?” This guy is always trying to get me excited so I don’t think much of that, BUT I don’t want our baby to endure countless gay jokes all his life. So will naming him Gabe set him up for this? I guess I never really connected the two!!! So should it be Abram Joseph or Gabriel Joseph?? Opinions please!!! I also thought Abram Gabriel, but I don’t like the sound of that as much!!! And I don’t think I want to do more than 2 names!!

My husband, by the way, really does not care either way!!! So he has not been much help!!

I love the name Gabriel but we heard “gay” whenever we said it so we considered it as a middle name only. We didn’t end up using it though.

Gabriel is a beautiful name…so his joseph…i dont know if i like abram…i think abraham sounds better…if you want him to be known as ABE OR GABE then why not name him ABE OR GABE as his first name…

Why not something like Samuel? I’ve always liked the name Nathan/Nathanial for a boy. There was a Nathanial in the bible. In the New Testament. Of course, going for any one of the apostles names might work. Maybe call the kid Samuel Andrew. Just a thought. 🤷

Joseph, the name of an honorable man of the Bible.

A name like Gabriel may help to “Build Character”.
A very well known talk show host in Ireland is called “Gay Byrne” (Short for Gabriel). now while he’s an old man now, and used “Gay Byrne” as is professional name from before the modern “Gay” culture became socially acceptable, if you’re willing to run the risk, I see nothing wrong with an attempt to do our part to reclaim the word gay (meaning happy and carefree) , and the name Gay short for Gabriel.

Having more than one name always allows your son to use his middle name as how he is known if he dosn’t like being known as Gabe or Gay.

It is a big ask for an as yet unborn child in todays world.

Are you pretty set on it being either Abram or Gabriel? Joseph is a nice first name. 😃

Gabriel is a fine Christian name and the name of one of the three archangels named in the Bible. So there’s nothing wrong with it. Is it possible that kids would use that as a way to make fun of him? Sure. Kids can find a way to make fun of all sorts of names in ways we cannot really predict. I would certainly be sensitive to that (and not name him something like “Harry” if your last name happened to be “Pitts”), but I wouldn’t let that be the sole determining factor.

I have always liked Samuel but that is my BILs name. Nathaniel is my husbands friend and Joseph was the name of our neighbors new baby and they will be in the same class:shrug: I told my son we could name him just Gabe and not Gabriel which he seemed more amenable too. But it really didn’t cross my mind that a Gabe would be teased with “gay” until that comment!! I like Abraham too but we all kind of thought Abram sounded a little more modern. We have a short last name so a longer first name sounds better than just Abe or Gabe!! But maybe I am just over thinking this!

True. Kids will find anything funny if given a chance. You’d think a Sanskrit name would be free from bad puns, but when I was in school in Geneva (long story) the kids thought it was hilarious to convert “Ravi” (my name) to “Ravioli” (pasta!) and thence to the rhyming “pipi au lit” (bedwetting ). Much childish rage ensued.

Actually, the other apostles’ names are nice, too. James, Jude, Philip, Andrew… 👍

My friend called his second son Gabriel (his first boy is called Seth) and I don’t think anyone has ever shortened it to “Gabe” - but maybe Gabe is a name you only hear in America. Gabriel, Abraham and Joseph are all lovely names.

😦 I’d be impressed at their creativity if it were not also quite mean.

Even “Joseph” is not immune to childish taunting. There’s lots of things that rhyme with “Joe”.

True. I can chuckle at it now, thirty years later, but it stung at the time. :o

Absolutely. That’s my point - no name is really immune, so ultimately, unless it’s something really “kick-me” (like Shelverstein’s Sue) parents just need to trust their own beliefs and preferences.

I wouldn’t worry about “Gabe” and “Gay”. Sure someone might try and tease him with it, but if they are going to tease him they can do it a million ways. I also think “Gabe” is more common than “Gay” so few people are going to think he said his name was “Gay” rather than “Gabe”.

I once knew a couple who’s oldest (only 3 when I knew them) went by her middle name. Ok, her middle name was Elizabeth, but she went by Betsy. Why? Her first name was Naomi, and apparently other kids had trouble pronouncing it and called her Miami. 🤷

My nephew’s name is Gabriel. Everyone calls him Gabe. I haven’t heard anyone every refer to him as Gay. Although, it could be a cultural thing. I doubt in this day and age you’d find many people calling him Gay.

Then again I call my son Bass (yes like the fish). His name is Sebastian. I’ll admit I chuckle to myself when I get weird looks when calling him in the store. 😃 He even calls himself Bassy.

That is so neat. My one year old is named Sebastian too!!! We were so undecided with his name too but I just love it now!! So unique and yet biblical as well. We call him Seb or more commonly Sebbie!!! His aunt calls him Bash but that just didn’t stick with us and I wouldn’t like that if he ended up being a wild kid:).

We live in Ohio and Gabriel is usually shortened to Gabe. I was just concerned that it might be a name that is commonly made fun of , like gay Gabe or something!! I really didn’t think so but when our friend kind of made fun of it, I had to wonder!!!

I’ve never in my life heard anyone connect “Gabe” and “Gay.” Either as a well-intentioned nickname or a joke. 🤷

You gotta remember he’s going to be growing up in a different generation, though. As a kid I remember people laughed when others were referred to as “gay” (not even as a nickname), but as our kids grow up it will be considered the ultimate form of secular blasphemy! If anyone thinks of it as a joke, they’d better keep it to themselves lest they be labeled a Hateful Bigot Spewing Hate and probably suspended or something. In conclusion, you’re probably safe with Gabriel 👍
