While scrolling through Rotten Tomatoes to find a good movie to watch, I saw one called “Novitiate” and thought it looked interesting. It got really good reviews. Anyone seen it? Does it portray Catholicism in a good light or should I not watch it?

edit: On second thought, I’m starting to think I shouldn’t after reading about it some more…

I wouldn’t touch it, from what I’ve read. I wonder when Hollywood will get tired of the cloistered-nun-abused-by-mean-superior-to-whom-she-has-vowed-obedience, or the cloistered-nun-who-has-tryst-with-priest-and-gets-pregnant stories. Just lurid and stupid stuff.

It makes the contemplative life seem more like prision that tne actual blessing it is

Movies tend to do that lately. It’s basically impossible to find a movie on nuns and their joy.

Sounds like the Young Pope. It really is sad. Of course it would get good reviews because it shows something that the secular world agrees with - that God is nonexistent and obedience makes us unhappy. Perhaps they shouldn’t have created the movie if they had no true knowledge of the subject matter. I mean, they had good material to work with but it sounds like they kind of botched it.

Anyhow, I think I’ll be skipping it this time. Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut!

Watching the trailer, I would say it is an interesting take on the Vatican II changes and how they affected religious communities.

If I have the time, I will watch it. 🌷
