I was wondering if I could get opinions on* Dr. Scott Hahn’s Understanding the Scriptures: A Complete Course on Bible Study is a 560-page* It looks like something that is good for people new to the faith or rediscovering their faith. Is it also good for people who are well versed in their faith?

I haven’t heard of anything from Scott Hahn that wasn’t worth the time it took to read, and read again, and read again! I’ve got several of his books and CD’s and absolutely love them. Well, except for Swear to God. I just can’t get into that one.

I’ve read it and I would recommend it. Basically, it’s a high school text that takes you through much of the Bible. If you’re looking for extensive commentary (such as the Navarre Bible or Haydock) I wouldn’t recommend it. If you’re new to reading the Bible (especially the Old Testament) or would like a refresher I would recommend it. Think of it as more of an outline of the entire Bible preparing the reader to better read the Bible than an extensive commentary helping the reader understand specific passages.

It’s very well organized although I skipped the questions at the end of each chapter.

While it is marketed as a high school text, I would not hesitate to use it in grades 5-8 as well.
