Options for Readings for a Funeral Mass?

Friends,

Is it appropriate for a family to choose readings for a funeral Mass for a loved one? Are there suggested readings? Can some one point me to the actual Rite for use in the United States?

Hi Philip,
I am from the NY Archdiocese, so I cannot say for sure if the details are the same for you, but yes, we can Choose the first (OT), second (NT) and Gospel readings. Sometimes the priest may wish to give a homily on a particular Gospel, so he may change that, but this would be an unusual situation
The actual Rite is usually a Mass, if it is held in Church, but you could ask a Priest to hold a service at the Funeral Parlor, if you wish. I suppose you could also have a service without a Mass in Church, but I have never seen this done. Ask you priest, if you wish a definite answer.
