I was wanting to know what is the best order to read the bible in? I have heard that most do not read it straight from page 1 but take it in parts. So what parts should one start with?

Start with the gospels. The gospel of John is a good choice or you can just go Matthew through John. Then just keep going through the New Testament.

You could also check with a local Catholic or even Christian bookstore and see if they have a chart of how to read the Bible through.

Another option is to alternate between the New and Old Testaments and use the table of contents as a check list.

The Easy Way to read the whole Bible in 3 years: read prayerfully and carefully the daily and Sunday Mass readings. Get a Daily Roman Missal (expensive) or subscribe to Magnificat (somewhat less expensive, also has morning and evening prayer), or The Word Among Us or Our Daily Bread (low cost, use your own Bible, have beautiful reflections and teachings on the readings). Free: your parish bulletin probably lists the daily readings, use your own bible. A New American Bible uses the same version as the lectionary.

The Catholic Youth Bible by St. Mary’s Press had several suggested reading plans as alternates.

If you want an in-depth Bible study which will give you a foundation on salvation history, and the groundwork for all future bible study, try Our Father’s Plan, a 3-video series by Scott Hahn and Jeff Cavins, available with study guide from Ignatius Press. I understand this original EWTN series is about to be rebroadcast.

Pnewton is right. Start in the New Testiment. I started with Luke. Luke was sent by a friend to validate the what was saying about the early christians, sort of like an investigaing reporter. Then Jump to Acts (which is actually Luke part II). That will give you a solid base to reach out from , then pick up one of the “Read the Bible in …” what ever time frame you want (1 or 3 years). Finally, as my mother would say…a Proverb a day keeps the Devil away (there are 31 proverbs and they are an easy read).

Hope this helps

If you are new to the message of the Gospels, then reading the four Gospels first is a good recomendation. I usually tell people to start with Mark (it’s the shortest) and leave John to the last (its a bit different in its approach).

If you want to get the story of God’s plan for salvation, then use the Bible Timeline Approach offered by Jeff Cavins:

Genesis
Exodus
Numbers
Joshua
Judges
I Samuel
2 Samuel
1 Kings
2 Kings
Ezra
Nehemiah
1 Maccabees
Luke
Acts

I would read the NAB (and have an RSV-CE handy) in this order.

NT: In order startng with Matthew. Read once through slowly line by line , then read again more quickly.

Then read the OT starting at Gen and in order. Once slowly line by line and then again more quickly.

This took me two years to do, and effectively I read the bible twice in two years.

Now I read selected books or chapters and not in an particular order. Also use the cross references inthe NAB.

Be sure to read the Second Vatican Council Document Dei Verbum.

The Navarre Bible Commentary is my favorite commentary.

I’m not entirely sure the cycles cover the WHOLE Bible… but it certainly covers a significant chunk of it.

An excellent down-loadable on-line resource is available from the Coming Home Network. It takes you through the entire Bible and Catechism of the Catholic Church in one year:
