Does anyone know of any orthodox religious orders that don’t require one to be free of student loan debt? I’ve looked at several groups, like the FSSP, but they have policies that require me to be free of my student loans when I apply. That is simply not possible. Does anyone know of other groups that have different policies? I’ll consider any order that is faithful to the Church and her teachings. Thanks.

What do you mean Orthodox?

I am in the process of joining the Carmelites. The order is Orthodox but some of the priests within it might be on the liberal side sometimes. The younger members seem to be on the other side. (I am willing to talk a bit privately on this if you want)

They take care of student loans. The order will pay minimum payments on your student loans until you make final vows and then they pay them off but if you leave before final vows then you must pay them but all that the order has paid is considered a gift.

i was looking for the same type of info, FSSP seems great but i know there is no way i will be student loan debt free when i graduate…

So do you mean Orthodox in that they only offer the TLM?
My preference is for an order that only offers the TLM but your suggestions need not be limited to those specific orders.

no, Orthodox (in my case) in that they strictly follow doctrine and dont pick and chose what they want and dont want like so many orders today.

In the larger established orders you are going to run into all kinds of individuals.

I didn’t realize that student debts were discouraged! (I always thought it was a house payment or car payment that was considered a debt) How many orders help with student loans? I’m going to a state college, and got a small scholarship, so I won’t have a huge debt, thank goodness! Probably about 10,000 by the time I’m done.

Oh, one other question, will some orders pay for a master’s (and possibly a doctorate’s) degree after you’ve joined? Like a sort of “continuing education”?

Holly, most orders that I know of what take over your student loans. Some more specialized orders such as FSSP seem to have stricter requirements in this regards.

The Dominican rite of the Mass, celebrated by Dominicans, is similar to the TLM, from what I have been told.

Most religious orders and secular institutes I have looked into ask that you be free of student loans. If you have a problem with debt and you are discerning a vocation, you may want to seek out a Catholic organization like the Knights of Columbus which gives grants to seminarians and novices.

What have you looked into? While I haven’t spoken to vocations directors, many of the various websites I have investigated indicate that student loans are not a big problem.

I have been looking into the Institute of Christ the King where one of the requirements is no outstanding debt. This is about the same for various other orders I have looked into.

I’ve noticed this with all of the orders that offer the TLM. I suspect it is because they are relatively new, when compared with other groups.

I don’t know of any Dominicans who celebrate the old Dominican rite. My impression was that it was no longer done.

A friend of mine attends a parish where it is celebrated.

You could look at the Laboure Foundation perhap? They help with debt for those who have vocations to religious life. Perhaps pray for a benefactor to help pay off you debts, I know of a few people who had thousands in debts that were paid off.
