What is an order of chivalry? I saw an announcement that said there were 2 new US Cardinals, one of them being the grand master of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher. Apparently the order of the Holy Sepulcher is an order of chivalry.

What in the world is an order of chivalry? And what is a papal order?

Orders of Chivalry were created by European monarchs after the Crusades, based on a romanticized image of the military orders of warrior-monks like the Templars and Hospitallars (the latter are still around, commonly known as the Knights of Malta, though they are no longer monastic and members are drawn from the European aristocracy). Though some of the Chivalric Orders originally fullfilled a military purpose (sometimes acting as the personal bodyguard of royalty), membership tends to be honorary.

Some examples are the Order of the Garter, the Order of the Golden Fleece, the Order of Saint Hubert, ect.

A Papal Order is a Chivalric Order that has the Pope as it’s head. The Order of the Golden Spur is one Papal Order.

The Teutonic Knights are still around, mainly in Germany and Austria. They are now just a purely religious order of men engaged in charitable works.
They also have sisters of the order as well.
Some of these communities did have female branches as well,
but I don’t think we know much about them.
