A friend from college is being ordained as a priest in a couple of weeks. I am not Catholic, but I consider him a good friend as he helped me a lot during my first year away from home (I have a physical disability and he had also worked at the summer camp I used to go to so we had that in common too).

I have no idea what is appropriate, and I also have no idea where to even get a card. I live in a rural area so there’s no Catholic bookstores or the like.

Thanks!

I bought a card for an ordination at our local Hallmark store. Just ask someone if you can’t find them.

I got a rosary as a gift for someone from our church being ordained. I know he probably has rosaries, but the one I got was very nice, and made with paracord, able to be carried in a pocket without being broken.

I’d encourage the care package/basket route or in a sturdy neutral colored backpack. Heat and eat soups, those hummus and chips kits, peanut butter crackers, tuna and crackers, Gatorade…with a note about how you will be thinking of him as he starts this new and busy chapter in his life. A good car safety kit and a gas cars with a note about him staying safe on his travels. Since you are not religious I think that it would be meaningful to give from what you know.
