I’m curious to hear from users what are major theological distinctions between the Oriental Catholic traditions and the Byzantine tradition?

I get we have commonalities as easterners vs. the west, but I’m curious what do people in the pews have to say. Either Byzantines who have fellowshiped with Orientals or Orientals who have fellowshiped with Byzantines.

Thanks!

I’m looking for Marduk or Malphono!

Also in addition to my original question. How similar are the traditions of the Oriental Communion with one another. You have quite a diverse group there.

My brother in Christ.

I don’t have time right now, and I will be gone for several days after this. I’ll just give the items that are distinctive in the Oriental Tradition:

(1) The understanding of the Essence/Energy distinction
(2) Baptism
(3) Original Sin
(4) Doctrine of Atonement
(5) Doctrine of the Justice of God
(6) Greater appreciation for the Natural Law
(7) slightly different concept of afterlife
(8) more penitential spirituality (does that count?)
(9) we stick to only 7 Sacraments (from what I’ve read and heard, Easterns sometimes regard other things as Sacraments).
(10) Theosis

I admit I was tempted to add certain items that are distinctive between the EO and OO, but are not so within the Catholic communion (e.g., ecclesiology, the fact that OO don’t have a theological axe to grind with filioque, etc.), but I stopped myself.😃

I’ll explain those points more, as well as respond to the rest of your request, when I return. I may not be back for a week or so. And I hope no one gets bored with my presentation because I’ve explained these things in the past before in separate threads.:o

Blessings,
Marduk

I know I stated I would explain the distinctions this weekend, but I have found I have less time than anticipated. Perhaps readers have read my explanations in past, separate threads before, or maybe readers are already aware of these distinctions, so an explanation is not necessary on my part.

Since I don’t have much time right now, I would like to offer the following as a compromise: If anyone requires an explanation of any one of these items, let me know.
(1) The understanding of the Essence/Energy distinction
(2) Baptism
(3) Original Sin
(4) Doctrine of Atonement
(5) Doctrine of the Justice of God
(6) Greater appreciation for the Natural Law
(7) slightly different concept of afterlife
(8) more penitential spirituality (does that count?)
(9) we stick to only 7 Sacraments (from what I’ve read and heard, Easterns sometimes regard other things as Sacraments).
(10) Theosis

Marduk

Mardukm-

If you could (when you have time) elaborate on #5, “Doctrine of the Justice of God”, I would greatly appreciate it. 🙂

3 and 7, for a start. Could you link to your previous explanations on the differences?

Explanations forthcoming.

I have been busy on other threads.

Thanks for your patience.

Blessings,
Marduk

Thank you for the BUMP! I have not forgotten about it. Please be patient. There are too many threads on the papacy for me to pass up!😃

Blessings,
Marduk
