I understand that Oriental Orthodox, and I imagine Oriental Catholics by extension, at least in the Coptic and Syriac traditions, understand that most humans first go to the abode of the dead, Hades, whether in Abraham’s bosom or in the place of torment, according to their works, where they await the final judgment and entry into eternal glory or eternal damnation. Putting aside the very distinct theological traditions between Latin and Oriental thought on these matters, could the underlining mystery be seen as the Oriental “equivalent” of the Latin purgatory?

Thanks. I’m hoping someone from the Syriac or Coptic tradition will be able to shed some light.
This link was recommended to me several years ago. I hope this helps. It’s from qadishat.com, regarding “All Soul’s Day and Purgatory in the Syriac Tradition.”

I’m interested in comments from other Syriacs particularly regarding Saint Ephrem’s works related to this subject.
I’m woefully undereducated to properly discuss this subject beyond a few sentences, so I am very interested in hearing from our learned friends.
