Hi. I’d like to read Origen’s books. Could anyone point me to some, perhaps at a novie level? There is a catholic bookshop in Santa Cruz I will be visiting.

Sincerely,

I have never read anything by Origen, so I can’t give you a personal recommendation. All I know is that Against Celsus is generally regarded as his most important book. Celsus was the author of a book (now lost) against Christianity, and Origen’s reply is designed to refute Celsus’ arguments, point by point.

There’s this book too, Origen’s Homilies 1-14 on Ezekiel, translated by Dr. Thomas P. Scheck, from the Ancient Christian Writers series by Paulist Press

I haven’t read it, so I can’t recommend it one way or the other. From what I’ve read, Origen was an important Church Father and quite influential, although some of his ideas eventually ran afoul of Church teaching. That said, much of what he proposed and taught is still relevant and valid.
