I remeber reading somewhere that questioned weather or not Origen was heretical. No specific objections where given. Does anyone know weather Origen was orthadox or not? Thanks and God bless.
He espoused a version of universalism – the idea that eventually everybody ends up in heaven. Among other problematic beliefs, apparently. Something about the trinity being a hierarchy rather than three persons subsisting equally in one nature, something about the pre-existence of souls – he seems to have been declared anathema on some nine to fifteen counts. Oh, and he also took Matthew 19:12 a little too literally and cut his nuts off.
All that notwithstanding (or, perhaps, because of it), he was still quite an interesting character, and given the extent of his scholarship and writings it’s not hard to see why his more orthodox teachings are still referenced today.
