The Catholic Encyclopedia was written quite some time ago. At the time it was written, the “National Baptist” was fairly new.

The National Baptist Convention was founded in 1886. I suppose it was a banding together of separate Black Baptist Churches that were built after the Civil War. Until the end of the Civil War, I suppose Blacks could not easily buy their own land or often have permission to leave their masters to attend a Church. And Black slaves could not participate in quite a few legal activities (even getting a marriage license).
My particular Baptist Church was begun by a Missionary sent from the American Baptist Home Missionary Society. It began in 1872, about seven years before the Roman Catholic Church was in town. A large number of Blacks attended outside the first Roman Catholic Church service. The 125th anniversary Mass was held Tuesday morning in the original Church. It really was too small to hold everyone who came on its first worship service. I think I was the only one from my Baptist Church present at this 125th anniversary and I didn’t need to sit outside – there was room enough.
Perhaps the National Baptist Church (and many other predominantly Black Churches) are branches of our Lord’s Church that did not start out being schisms based on religious beliefs. They were essentially segregation based upon the color of peoples’ skin and upon their national origins.

Are you responding to an assertion that Baptists are survivors of the true Church founded by Christ but that the Catholics, persecuted them and destroyed all the written records to make it look like the Catholic Church was the only game in town the “trail of blood” story published in 1931?

They got their doctrine from the Congregationalists, who in turn got it from the Calvinists. Their unique baptismal practices came in part from the Anabaptists, (but the Anabaptists baptised by pouring not immersion), and the rest they came up by thierselves … immersion.
The “Trail of Blood” theory is a historical mish-mash. In it any and all kinds of heretics (gnostics, adoptionists, people who did not believe in Baptist teachings at all) were claimed as Baptists in order to give Baptists a “historic line” going back to apostolic times.
No Baptist scholar takes the “Trail of Blood” theory seriously.
