I’ve been reading a lot lately about trauma and its healing and it occurred to me the many parallels with our traditional Catholic understanding of the “stain” of original sin that we all have at conception as a kind of hole or wound: A “something missing” in our souls due to separation. The something missing is, of course, our deep union with the Divine or a perfect sense of “home”. I just had a thought about speaking of it in terms of trauma rather than “sin” to avoid the usual misunderstandings associated with use of sin to describe these effects.

The only sin was Adam’s (and Eve’s), but for us there’s no sin (except our personal sins). There’s only trauma. All traumas are due to a form of separation wound of some sort. We can speak of it as the primary trauma of mankind: our sense of separation from the Divine that occurs at conception (when explaining it to others who struggle with the concept).
