My brother who left the Catholic Church many years ago and describes himself as a Bible believing Christian says:

Eve sinned first and then Adam. However, Adam was charged or held accountable for allowing sin to enter the world and not Eve. Original sin is inherited sin and this sin is a sin nature. It is a separation from God and is passed on in the male seed. If there is no male seed, there is no original sin. This is why Jesus was born of a virgin otherwise Jesus would have inherited original sin.

When Adam sinned he created separation from God for the entire human race. Eve only created a separation between God and herself and herself and Adam. The sin nature is passed down through Adam. We are all born with a sin nature (separation from God).

Thank you and God bless.

Take a look at the following; consider printing these resources and giving them to your brother, or forwarding to him the web-links:

I would tell him that it is more by association. Sperm is not what passes on Original Sin. Original Sin is simply a seperation from God, it is not some substance that needs handed on. Man sinned, therefore he lost the beatific vision. He lost his relationship with God.

Nothing of this, except for the fact that we are seperated from God, is ever even alluded to in scripture. This is purely a doctrine of men(tell him that).

This persons main error is that they assume that Christ was free from Original Sin because he had no human father. Thhe truth is, Christ was free from Original Sin because He is the incarnation of God. It is absolutely impossible that Christ would be born with OS because He was 100% God. To say that His nature could be both united to sin and united to the divine nature is horribly blasphemous because it assumes that God somehow does not destroy evil.

The highlighted protion is interesting. First it says Mary is free from sin (very catholic indeed) however for the wrong reason, because she hasn’t had marital relations. So Jesus is born without sin. By this same reasoning then all women are free from sin, unless they have marital relations, and have no need of a savior. Only men have a sinful nature. So for a woman to marry and have children condemns her or is she still free from sin?

Which doesn’t harmonize with his second statement that we are all born of a sinful nature because of Eve creating a seperation between herself and God. Therefore women are sinful which means Mary must have had a sinful nature, which Christ would have inherited.

If a virgin (female) doesn’t have original sin the last thing on earth I would be doing is getting married.

Peace and God Bless

No, it says that original sin is passed down through the male seed, it didn’t say women didn’t have it. Women come from a male seed, too, so they would inherit original sin, they just couldn’t pass it (well, according to this individual).

Kinda wierd but basically in women Original sin is dormant? Makes it sound like a biological disease.

Yeh, that is a big problem with the idea. They make it a genetically inherited disease. It is then something wrong with your flesh, which is heresy. You are then flirting with the gnostics and manichees in heresy. Original Sin is a state between your soul and God, it not a matter of flesh.

You are afflicted with it by virtue of nothing more heinous than having been created and created human.

You are correct in the way he states his position. This is why he says Mary cannot pass original sin to Jesus, because she was a virgin at the time of Jesus’ birth. He believes Mary was born with original sin or a sin nature because it came from her father.
