Greetings…

During our prayer group last night, we discussed the original sin of Adam & Eve. Someone wondered aloud that nature is affected by sin also. The perfect harmony of the environment was also a victim of original sin. It is a source of the world’s natural calamities. He pointed-out that Adam & Eve had to leave the Garden of Eden and go “out there”. I realize we can, and have, been abusive as stewards of the earth at times, but wouldn’t these calamities occur anyway?

Thanks in advance for any and all comments…

May the graces of the Holy Spirit rain down upon us…

Well I think the very fact that we have to “toil the earth” places us in direct opposition to nature. And it would further stand to reason that, if God stated that for Adam’s sin we would now be required to “toil”, we were originally in harmony with the earth and that it provided what we needed.

So, I guess I would say that nature must be feeling a bit of the effects of Original Sin- to fulfill God’s decree to Adam.

Thats an interesting observation. I would have liked to be at your discussion group. Maybe that explains natural disasters, unexplained illnesses and the like. As to whether these calamities occur regardless of our mannor of stewarship towards the earth, I say yes they would still occur. However, we do have a great responsiblity and duty to be good stewards of the world and what we do can increase or decrease the “calamities”.

Man fell in the Fall.

Material Creation did not directly. Only indirectly, inasmuch as it is meant to serve man.

So its purpose did fall; from serving a Supernatural purpose, to serving a Natural purpose. From serving an Elevated Creature, to serving a Fallen Creature.

But material creation itself did not change like human nature did.

We lost Sanctifying Grace, Immortality, Impassibility etc…we OBJECTIVELY changed.

Material Creation only SUBJECTIVELY changed, inasmuch as it was relative to man.

Earthquakes still would have happened before the Fall, they are a good part of God’s inanimate Creation. But the difference is, before the fall they WOULDN’T HAVE HURT HUMANS.

But not because material creation would have specifically “chosen” not to hurt humans, but because Humans would have been unhurtable, and besides…would have known when Earthquakes were going to occur supernaturally and have been able to protect what they wanted to.

Animals still would have died, obviously. They were meant to die, it is in their nature. WE were not meant to die.

So material creation only “fell” inasmuch as man fell, and only relative subjectively to its relationship with man.

But it was all man’s fault, and all the “falling” objectively occured on man’s end of the line.

Even when you think of things like man “throwing nature out of balance”…this is all natural for material creation. It was meant to die and change and be replaced by new forms. Man can never destroy Matter and Energy. He can change their form, but they have not fallen.

In fact, when man changes certain natural systems…he does not actually hurt them. They are not conscious, and matter continues to exist and change and go through cycles. He only hurts HIMSELF.

ROMANS 8 (NIV)
Code:
18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. 20For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21that* the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.
22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.*

Yes, this coming Sunday’s second reading (Romans 8:18-23) is what prompted this line of thought…

For those that live in the Tampa area, we have our Men’s Prayer Group meeting every Tuesday evening at 7pm at St Lawrence Catholic Parish. Bascially, we read and discuss the upcoming Sunday’s readings and attempt to apply them to our lives today.

Feel free to visit…

May we be aware of the presence of our Lord Jesus at the threshold of our hearts…and let Him in.
